Self-Management in Lifestyle Enhancement (SMiLE) is operated by the National University of Singapore (NUS). It is SMiLE's policy to respect your privacy regarding any information we may collect while operating our website.
Your privacy is very important to us. At SMiLE we have a few fundamental principles:
If you have questions about deleting or correcting your personal data please contact us.
When you visit SMiLE, we collect the following types of information:
Like most website operators, SMiLE collects non-personally-identifying traffic information that web browsers and servers typically make available, such as the browser type, language preference, referring website, and the date and time of each visitor request. SMiLE's purpose in collecting non-personally identifying information is to better understand how SMiLE's visitors use its website.
SMiLE collects potentially personally-identifying information like Internet Protocol (IP) addresses.
To use SMiLE, you must create an account by registering. As part of registration, SMiLE requires you to provide selected personal information (e.g. name, e-mail address, etc.).
After registering on SMiLE, you must provide weekly information in order to participate in the programme. This information will be used in the aggregate as part of the research efforts at NUS. SMiLE only discloses user and commenter IP addresses under the same circumstances that it uses and discloses personally-identifying information, as described below.
You may identify a third party who will support you in this programme. After you identify this person, SMiLE will collect that person's e-mail address and automatically send the person an e-mail, and if necessary, a reminder e-mail inviting him or her to visit the website. SMiLE stores this information for the sole purpose of sending this e-mail and any related reminder e-mails to track the success of the referral program. Your friend can contact us to request that we remove this information from our database if he or she wishes.
Your supporter will be able to view the website and all content that you can view so they will be able to experience the site in parallel with yourself.
Visitors to SMiLE's website who register choose to interact with SMiLE in ways that require SMiLE to gather personally-identifying information. Those who engage in transactions with SMiLE by registering for the programme are asked to provide additional information required to participate in the programme. In each case, SMiLE collects such information only insofar as is necessary or appropriate to fulfil the purpose of your interaction with SMiLE. SMiLE does not disclose personally-identifying information other than as described below.
The security of your information is of paramount importance to us. Your SMiLE account information is protected by a password for your privacy and security. In addition, we follow generally accepted industry standards to protect the personal information of our users, both during transmission and after we receive it. SMiLE strives to use commercially acceptable means to protect your personal information, including use of encryption, firewalls, and hashing on select types of information collected by SMiLE. When you enter sensitive information during the commitment contract creation process, we encrypt your information during transmission using 128 bit secure socket layer technology (SSL). No method of transmission or electronic storage is 100% secure, however, so SMiLE cannot guarantee absolute security.
You can enhance your security by protecting against unauthorized access to your password and to your computer by logging off once you have finished using a shared computer.
After you register, SMiLE will send you a welcome e-mail. SMiLE may also send out e-mails in response to your inquiries, manage your account, and to facilitate any other types of communication required for use of the website. You may receive notification e-mail from SMiLE informing you of actions performed on the website, such as reminders and notifications.
However, note that you will continue to receive certain system e-mails, such as those regarding forgotten user passwords and legal notices informing you when we update our policies.
If you have provided us information to invite a third party to the website to be your supporter, then we will automatically send that third party e-mail inviting him or her to visit the website. Your friend may contact us here or through the link on the bottom of the e-mail to request that we remove their information from our database.
Information about you, such as your user name and picture, will not be displayed to any other SMiLE users or entities outside of the study administrators.
SMiLE may collect statistics about the behaviour of visitors to its websites. For instance, SMiLE will monitor the data you enter every week and your completion of each activity. SMiLE will not display this information publicly or provide it to others, but will use the information in the aggregate for research-oriented work. SMiLE does not disclose personally-identifying information other than as described below.

We expect to keep this type of e-mail to a minimum. If you send us a request (for example via a support e-mail or via one of our feedback mechanisms), we reserve the right to publish it in order to help us clarify or respond to your request or to help us support other users. SMiLE takes all measures reasonably necessary to protect against the unauthorized access, use, alteration or destruction of potentially personally-identifying and personally-identifying information.
You can always opt not to disclose information, but then you may be unable to use certain features on our website.

We will retain your information for as long as your account is active or as needed to provide you services. We will retain and use your information as necessary to comply with our legal obligations, resolve disputes, and enforce our agreements.
